In addition to offering financial support, there are several opportunities for becoming a volunteer at the Center. From the beginning, volunteers have been involved at every level of the Center’s operations, from service on the board of directors, to tutoring and staff support, to facility rehabilitation. If you are interested in volunteering for any amount of time, the following opportunities are available.

EARLY CHILD CARE PROGRAMClassroom Assistant – There are 68 children, ages 3-5 years old, enrolled in the Preschool Program. Volunteers can assist teachers with lunch preparation, projects, art, music and playground time anytime between the hours of 7am to 6pm. SCHOOL AGE CHILD CARE PROGRAMMentoring Program (Buddy Club)– This program is for school age children. The committment is once a week, meeting with a child in the afternoon for one hour between 4:00 and 6:00. The relationship formed is beneficial to the student’s educational career and social development, as well as the mentor’s volunteer experience. Requirements include patience, positive attitude, high school diploma or higher, and no criminal record. After School Tutor - Volunteers help students with homework and assist the teacher in the classroom. Many students need one-on-one tutoring in math and reading. FAMILY RESOURCE PROGRAMAdult Tutor – As a tutor in the GED class (English or Spanish), you can teach a subject or help students with assignments. Tutors must have patience and understand the challenges of adult learning. Computer Tutor – Meet with small groups of adults to teach them how to use basic computer programs such as Word and Excel. Also instruct how to use the Internet and email.

OTHER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIESGrounds/Building Maintenance – Ground’s maintenance is needed year round. It might include weeding, sweeping the playgrounds, mulching and replacing plants. Also, thorough cleaning of classrooms and offices would be helpful along with organizing storage areas. Painting - Several rooms at Sacred Heart need a fresh coat of paint and a little brightening up. This is a good project for your corporate group, civic organization or church group. Donated paint and supplies are greatly appreciated. Receptionist - Looking for a smiling face to answer the phone and greet people who visit Sacred Heart Center. Must be personable and professional because the receptionist is the first impression of Sacred Heart Center. One afternoon a week from 3:30 until 6:00 Annual Report and Newsletter – Do you have the skills needed to put our annual report together or help coordinate a newsletter? Computer experience and creativity a must. Library Assistant – Volunteers are needed to spend about an hour a week re-shelving and organizing books. Donated books also need labels and to be shelved in the correct area. The volunteer would be responsible in keeping the library in order and would have the opportunity to present fun and educational displays. Miscellaneous - Present fun & informational workshops, organize summer field trips & recreation activities, host holiday presentations and parties for the children or supply theatre, museum, sports tickets, etc. Clerical Assistance - Help with copying, stuffing envelopes and other clerical duties. "Weight Lifters"- Occasionally we need helpmoving large items. As needed. |
